Spartan mowers use hydrostatic transmissions. If they lose pressure or fluid flow, the mower won’t move. Spartan mower use three different transmissions: Parker, Tuff Torq, and HydroGear. Verify which transmissions you have before adding fluid to make sure you are adding the correct fluid.
What to check
-Low hydraulic fluid
-Air in the system
-Old or contaminated fluid
-Clogged filters
How to fix it
-Check hydraulic fluid level (engine off, cool mower)
-Top off with manufacturer-recommended fluid
-Inspect for leaks around hoses and pumps
-If fluid is dark or smells burnt → drain and replace
-Bleed the system if air is present (cycle forward/reverse slowly)

The belt transfers power from the engine to the hydraulic pumps. If it’s loose or damaged, power never reaches the wheels.
What to check
-Belt tension
-Cracks, glazing, or fraying
-Belt completely off pulley
How to fix it
-Remove the deck or access panel
-Inspect belt condition
-Replace if worn or broken
-Check tensioner pulley—make sure it’s not seized

Linkage issues or bypass valves can also play a role in why your Spartan mower gets stranded in the yard. Visually inspecting any linkage that connects from the steering sticks to the transmissions is important. As well as checking the bypass valves on the transmissions themselves.
Linkage
If the control arms aren’t properly connected to the transmission, your inputs won’t translate into movement.
What to check
-Loose linkage under the seat or frame
-Bent rods or worn bushings
How to fix it
-Inspect linkage while moving control levers
-Tighten loose bolts
-Replace worn components if needed
